Kansas City plays an important role in the U.S. Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) program. Not only is it home to the largest FTZ in the nation, but the two zones in the area do more business than counterparts in Denver, St. Louis and elsewhere in the country.

In 2013 and 2014, Kansas City area zones ranked 23 in the nation in production activity for export. In 2014 alone, goods and merchandise received for production activities in Kansas City area FTZs totaled $1.89 billion.
